“Midlife crisis? WHAT midlife crisis?!”
Charlotte Bristow is worried about her husband Will. Their fourteen years of marriage have been rather lovely so far, but things have been a bit odd lately.
With their stunning 16-year-old daughter Rosie newly signed to a top modelling agency and Will recently out of a job, Charlotte can’t help but notice that things are changing in their household.
As Will dusts down his old leather trousers and starts partying with their new, fun neighbours, Charlotte begins to wonder what on earth is going on.
So when Fraser, Charlotte’s ex – and father of Rosie – suddenly arrives back on the scene, Charlotte starts to wonder what might have been…
I have been looking forward to this book, As Good As It Gets? since I saw this book on Amazon. The cover is totally cute and springish, cheerful combination of colours. It’s my first book by Fiona and I am really glad to be given the chance to read and review for the blog tour! Massive thanks to the awesome people at Avon.
Since this is my first book by Fiona, I’ve got nothing to compare and I don’t have to worry if it is as good as those before. As Good As It Gets? tells the story of Charlotte, a mother with two children, Rosie and Ollie. Her relationship with her husband, Will isn’t as great as it used to be and things at home are spiralling out of control. How could she keep her family happy and save her marriage when everything seems to be falling apart?
I was completely awed by Fiona’s writing, I felt that this book was exactly what I needed for the break I am having. The story gripped me from the beginning. Charlotte’s reaction towards Forever 21 reminded me of my mother! I liked her immediately! Charlotte isn't a very confident character, she doesn’t think highly of herself and Will’s reaction when she touches him erodes her self-esteem even more. She is so lovable and I can’t stop imagining my mom as her. Adorableness. Her maternal love has filled the story with indefinite comfort and security.
As Good As It Gets? is so homey. Her kids are so cool and Charlotte isn’t very strict with them. Rosie, Charlotte's daughter is scouted by a modelling agency, Face and that’s the beginning of the story. I was having all sorts of Victoria’s Secret thoughts and I looked forward to see how her career goes. There’s also Rosie's biological father, Fraser, that I couldn’t ignore. Really serious encounter and the humour aspect of the book goes down the slope, dies and I stopped crying with laughter. Charlotte’s colleagues at the posh crisps factory are the coolest people on earth. Though their roles to play in the story could be negligible, I cannot ignore their fabulousness. They are the story enhancers.
Will, Charlotte’s husband is a mystery. I didn’t warm up to him immediately. His relationship with Charlotte isn’t as great and I couldn’t believe he flinches when Charlotte touches him. I hated him but the whole leather pants situation had me rolling with laughter. I spent the whole time hoping for him to be the bad guy and trying to figure out if he has cheated on Charlotte. Mrrgh, he’s a frustrating man and I actually liked him as the story goes on.
I liked everything about this book. Nothing unusual or fancy about the story but it’s all about family. I wanted to hug my family members and never let them go at the end of this book. The endless security and comfort that was delivered with this book was all I needed for the break from uni. I will be passing this book to uni friends or dorm mates. It’s really close to my heart and moved me deeply. This story will never be old, it is a gem.
That's all from me! Thank you for reading my review and do check out the participating blogs! xx
